Beyond the Screen of Bliss There Is Bliss
2023
“Beyond the Screen of Bliss There is Bliss” researches water-based heterotopias, and especially focuses on the multi-layered facets of complex social and economical order within them.
Inspired by feministic, intersectional approaches, the project examines various mechanisms of control and desire as they manifest themselves in locations such as cruise ships, wellness resorts, school for water-police and a touristic-island. That, through different artistic techniques.
The series of works which carries the title “Beyond the Screen of Bliss There Is Bliss” combines videos, images and an upcoming publication. The three presented video works, “Sunscreen”, “6 Rehearsals towards Unknown” and “Away”, are a methodical combination of documentary perspective and authentic fictionalization of reality. In the works Ayala is intertwining basic elements of cinematography (one shot, cut, zoom out) with an exposed documentation/enactment of the relationship with her mother. The latter is ever-influenced by Ayala’s immigration and separation process, which is developing constantly and documented over the years.
